Partner Studio: Estro Studio, NC

Material: Black Walnut

Home Era: 1961, Mid-Century Modern

"A floor-to-ceiling black walnut wall unit designed in full collaboration with an interior studio, built to sit inside a genuine mid-century modern as though it was always there."

This project came through a referral from past clients who had engaged Estro Studio, an interior design practice based in North Carolina. The Kindrachuk house was designed and built in 1961 — a genuine mid-century modern, not a renovation that gestures toward the era. Original cedar plank ceiling, terracotta stone tile throughout.

Estro's concept was a floor-to-ceiling built-in wall unit. The brief was to stay within the design language of the house.

Black walnut was the natural choice — synonymous with the period, and the right material to sit alongside terracotta and cedar without competing with either. I produced full shop drawings and worked out a method to build and install the entire piece without exposed fasteners.

The veneer panels were stained with a danish walnut oil and finished with Osmo hardwax oil, hand-polished to a satin sheen. Osmo penetrates rather than films, so the surface is durable and repairable.

The grain was matched across each panel so it reads as continuous, the double doors were book-matched, and all exposed edges were covered in 3mm solid hardwood.

The piece sits in the room as though it was always there.
